Our client, a general contractor, had gone through several less than average safety directors over time, which created friction and distrust among the site superintendents and an unwillingness to buy into a sound safety program. As a Safety Consultant, I assisted our client with the hiring process by providing guidance on the qualities, responsibilities, education, and experience an effective safety director should have. I continued to work closely with the new safety director to provide both technical guidance and safety leadership skills. Personal goals were established as well as safety performance goals for field supervision. The company’s safety performance quickly jumped to above average and the site superintendents now see the safety director as an advocate and an advisor, rather than an adversary or someone trying to impede job progress.”
